A Forgiven Friend

Watching night going to meet the day,

A voice behind me did say,

"Bow before me and kiss my hand,

For you alone now stand in this barren land."

As I turned to see,

I asked, "Why should I worship thee?"

"Because who else are you,

Save all that you ever knew."

Said the voice with a sneer.

"And it all is standing before you here."

By the icy ragged light,

I looked over the bitter fight.

Then my stifled hollow laugh filled the air.

As the embracing form stood there.

"For this life I must now live,

My thanks to you I will give.

Though by all that you are I be,

In all and everything I am me."

So I supported that figure forlorn,

As together we watched the day dawn.
