Big Cat

(First published in VANTASIA No: 22 - Summer 2004)

Cheetah, head and neck linear,

whip tail still,

shoulders and haunches pump pistons

moving the prey machine

one paw nearer antelope -

life for two famished cubs,

neck fur fluffed, eyes following

every hot breath of wind

blowing blood their way.

The chase lasts seconds -

racing car speeds end

with heaving flanks

and empty stomachs.

Returning, cub's ambush

her twitching ears and lashing tail,

crying with pleasure and with pain.
