A distant place

(First published in QUANTUM LEAP No: 28 - November 2004

Philip Larkin - "Happiness writes white")

Talking in red ribbons like a valentine

your words remind me:

"unhappiness writes black".

Tied up in knots,

you're really talking into darkness,

every moment backwards,

closer to indelible sea than moonsoft sky;

heart twisted, becoming what twisted it,

blood swelling your veins

like ebony ink through water

and I know my destiny isn't plaited with you,

as bleak lessons of the crimson day

return from a distant place.
