Iain Pattison has had short stories published on radio and in numerous publications in Britain and other countries. He is a creative writing tutor, a leader of workshops and has judged countless competitions. He had a wealth of experience to call on when writing this book. In 23 chapters he covers every aspect of planning, writing and selling short stories with a touch of humour that leavens the information, and there are examples, exercises and summaries. At the very opening he gives encouragement: 'Writing good short stories isn't difficult. In fact, it's within everyone's grasp - if you know the right techniques.' You need, he says, a tight storyline, a single mood and style, few characters and viewpoints, simple dialogue and background. He believes market research must come before you begin writing and he gives an example of a form that might be used to help your study of magazines.

Anyone stuck for ideas will find a very helpful chapter showing how observing what goes on around you can start off a train of thoughts that can lead to a good story. Plotting, characterisation, dialogue, description, viewpoint, flashbacks, chapters on everything to help you produce a saleable story and after that, hints on how to sell genre fiction, writing for radio and on the Internet. Nearly four hundred pages crammed with all kinds of advice. 'Fun is what it's all about,' Iain says. 'Writing should always be a good laugh, a wonderful way of relaxing and letting go.' It is obvious that he has enjoyed writing this book and his wit and humour helps to drive home his tips. If you want to write stories that sell, study Cracking the Short Story Market. It's a winner.
